Worry: What Weighs Us Down

Let's start with the Bible. It is, after all an instruction manual for life directly from our Maker.

What does the Bible say about worry?

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)

Whether you are worried about money, your job, a relationship, health, or where your life is going, know that everyone has something to worry about. The question is- Will you let worry rule your life? I don't know about you, but worrying can be quite exhausting. It can lead to a lack of sleep, altered appetite, and a bad mood.

Philippians 4:6 says that we shouldn't worry. So, what should you do instead?

Later, that very same verse tells you exactly what you need to do:

Tell God what you need and thank Him.

You know how people go to counselors to help them with their depression and anxiety? Well, God is our “Wonderful Counselor”. He is always there to listen and carry our burdens. So, talk to Him. Verse 7 says that then, “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Now, you may be wondering, how do I talk to God? Verse 6 lays out the process in two steps:

  1. Tell God what you need. Speak to Him as a friend. Let Him know what burdens you bare. Lay them all down at the cross humbly.

  2. Thank God for all He has done. Acknowledge all of the good things God has done in your life.

Here is a simple example prayer:

Hi God, I'd like to ask for healing in my neck and head. I would also like to thank you for the good job that you have given my husband. Thank you Lord.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Just open your heart, pray, and listen. You don’t have to be alone. God is our Daddy- He helps us along the way.

Blessings!
